Is Your Driveway A Godly Driveway? (Is Your
Driveway God's Driveway?)
What did you do with your day today? I weeded my driveway. Ok, I will explain that one further. It all started with "Lazy Day" (I'd never heard of it before but sounded like fun to me). There were lots of cheerful notes exchanged over the Internet - what a great excuse not to do anything. I got all my mail caught up and was about to head out to the backyard to catch some sun and be lazy when I looked around my living room. What a disaster, it looked like a tornado had gone threw the room, worse than that as I journeyed on the whole place looked that way. My, my what would my parents think if they showed up unannounced (Mom keeps an almost spotless house) - better do a clean job and fast (still wanting to be lazy).
No caffeine in the house I decided to make a trip to the nearest convenience store for a Diet Pepsi (my caffeine of choice). As I pulled back into my driveway I had a profound thought. Yes, I do that occasionally! What a sight, a plastic cup lid with the straw still in it, a piece of notebook paper, car ramps tossed to the side from the last uses, cooler still setting where it had been dropped when taking it out of the car, and weeds, weeds, weeds. Here I was worried about what my house looked like and the last 3 or 4 times my parents had been to my house they had just pulled in the drive to pick up or drop off my son or sons. They hadn't even come in the house!
I did a quick run threw on the house and headed out not to "catch some sun" but to clean up my driveway. Now, I must explain here, my house is nothing fancy, one of those track houses thrown up in the 60s. They cleared the area of brush and planted 60 houses all with the same floor plan. Ok, there are 2 versions one with garage and one without, mine is without. When the houses were first built they all had the old gravel drives but over the years and changing owners most have now been replaced with concrete or paved. Mine however, hasn't been and the once gravel drive is now more dirt than gravel. There's a distinct line where tires from my car have kept the weeds from growing up but on each side and between the tire trail they were in some places as high as 6-10 inches.
The day progressed on and I had picked up the stray "trash" and taken care of the miscellaneous idems but my eyes kept going to those weeds. I was determined to have my driveway look at least presentable. With garden hose in hand (I couldn't afford week killer which would have been the easiest thing to do). Why the garden hose? Old trick I learned year's back, water loosens the dirt around the weeds and makes them easier to pull. Yes, I was going to "weed" my driveway. Why not? I have flowerbeds all the way around my house, along the side lot line, and around most all of the trees, I weed those (most of them anyway). I have my vegetable garden, which is weeded weekly, and a herb garden which is also kept weed free most of the time. Yet here was my driveway almost covered in weeds.
Setting on the ground or an old plastic milk crate I pulled and pulled and pulled. Two bushel baskets full of weeds and that was only half the driveway. But it was a glorious time to contemplate my life. I've been so concerned about people coming in my house but I don't really have that much company. Looking at my house from the outside in, from looking at my driveway what did people think of me. No one could tell I'm a Christian, that Christ is most important in my life. Not the neighbors out for their evening stroll, not the children riding their bikes past the house, not the teenagers flying by music blaring, smoking their "funny" cigarettes, and tossing empty beer bottles out in the ditch out front.

None of them saw the cross hanging on my computer, the Prayer of Serenity on the kitchen wall, or the two bibles on my desk (King James and a student study bible). What witness to the Lord was my driveway? Not a good one that's for sure! It wasn't a welcoming sight, it wasn't cheerful or inviting in anyway. What does your driveway say to people? Does it say to
passers by, Does it say, I'm cleaning up
my driveway, I haven't
figured out how yet but I am determined to let those
