Keep Our Children Safe!
Recently it was
brought to my attention that there are people lobbying to
have more regulations put on Internet Web Sites to help
protect our children. I am sure that eventually the
public servants such as Representatives, Congressman,
Senators, and Governors will get more involved but we all
know how government red tape works - years down the road.
Being a mother myself I am very concerned about what my
children see and hear television, radio, books, and on
the Internet. On the WWW anyone can see most anything
they want and there are people out there who are
"tricking" us into seeing things we don't want
to see and certainly don't want our childrento see. In
the meantime I have found a few ways to act now and keep
my family protected from "unwanted" media.
1) Helping to keep kids safe on the Internet is a very
important matter. My children are not allowed on line
unless I am right there with them and even then there
were in the past a few sites shown that I would rather
they didn't see (my youngest is 9). Anyone using Internet
Explorer & Netscape Communicator (I don't know about
other systems) can set their browser so objectionable
material cannot be viewed without a password. I think
this information needs to be spread to more people, it
would help a lot. This site gives complete instructions
on setting the controls if you don't know how. http://www.icra.org/ratingsv01.html
2) Online Safety Basics
http://www.safesurf.com/lifegard.htm
gives some great tips to keep in mind when children are
online.
3) For webmasters, there are
two sites I know of that will "rate" your site.
An unseen code is placed on the site (in the META tag)
letting other computers
know the rating on the site.
SafeSurf
http://www.safesurf.com

and
The Internet Content Rating Association
http://www.icra.org/
are both independent, non-profit organizations dedicated
to making the Internet
safe for our children from potentially harmful material
without censorship.

Is your site rated? It only takes a few minutes to apply
for rating and insert the code.
I have added the above information to my web site in an
attempt to get it seen by as
many as possible. I would love to see everyone do the
same - the more the word gets
out the fewer number of children will be subjected to the
garbage available on line.
Please feel free to copy this page, add it to your site,
link to it or email it to any friends
who may be interested. I have 4 children and 1 grandson
and I know I am willing to do anything in my power to
protect my family.
Sorry if I was too long with this but when I get on my
soapbox I get a little involved.
May God Bless and be with you all,
Faith Draper
